-facilitating access to documents and file
-guidance to searching information
-recording and expanding knowledge
-stimulating R & D
-avoiding duplication R & D
-Encourge cooperation, exchange and sharing of information between institutions and nations.

 Definition of cataloging is the preparation of bibliographic information of catalogue records.

 Cataloging consists:
-Descriptive cataloging
-Subject cataloging
-Classification

Definition of catalogue is the list of and index to a collection of book and other materials. A list of material in library or information center which are arrange by a certain arrangement.
